‘The best day ever at school’

Pupil leadership is something that is growing ever more important in primary schools and at Baildon C of E this is no different.

There is nothing that I would change about the course.’ Reuben Newby, Year 5 teacher.

It will improve us massively with numerous areas such as behaviour, attendance, participation and increasing physical activity further. Jake Shepherd, PE Lead.

From the initial meeting, Jake Shepherd (P.E. lead), explained that they had done some leadership training in the past that was not as successful as they had liked, and they were looking to empower some of their oldest pupils to also support in the lunch time provision that they had for the younger children in school. From this we agreed a full day of Active Ambassadors training to get this started as quick as possible and start benefitting the whole school sooner rather than later.

Of the process Jake noted the dealings with White Rose were

‘Amazing from start to finish. The support they offer throughout the entire process is fantastic and makes the day run smooth, allowing the children to have a fulfilling day’.

We also note that it was clear to see that Jake had a full understanding of the needs of the school and the children within it, this helped the organisation process immensely and ensured the success of the training!

With a very quick turnaround, the training itself began at 8.30am on Friday 19th April with the children all turning up enthused and ready to learn. Class teacher Reuben was involved in the training for its entirety and agreed to continue to support the new ambassadors after the training was completed. Another sign of the school placing real value on the new role within the school.

Throughout the delivery programme, the 6 key leadership skills were introduced and fully embraced by the learners, which allowed them to develop a deep understanding of how to use these skills to help them in their role of being a good Active Ambassador.

Avaani (A new active Ambassador) explained that she had learned

‘you have to be reflective to help you keep improving as a leader’ showing that she understood the need to take ownership of her own learning.

Georgia (another new Ambassador) spoke about how she was excited to ‘develop her courage and confidence’ to help her be an Active Ambassador, another example of how amazing the children at Baildon C of E were at trying to develop themselves to help other children in school.

By the end of the training day, all children began leading the activities that they will be in charge of leading to the younger children in school and it was clear to see just how much the children had learned and taken on board throughout the days training with all children endeavouring to use demonstrations to help the children understand with Oriyah explaining as part of her self-review

‘it is important to always be kind and helpful as well as showing people what to do’.

Talking about the day itself class teacher Reuben Newby spoke highly

‘The whole award and day were fantastic. From start to finish the children and I were engaged, interested, and learned a great deal. I particularly liked the way that the whole day revolved around the Key values of an active ambassador and how every activity and part of the day related to at least one of them.’

Noting of the White Rose Staff that attended Reuben also noted

‘For me the main strength was the energy that Jake delivered the session with and maintained right throughout the day.  This is not an easy thing to do, and it allowed the children to stay engaged and enjoy the day even more. In addition, the content delivered was perfect for the age range and always made it clear for the children.’

Ella (Year 5 Active Ambassador)

‘I feel like I have learned so much today about what it takes to be a leader and how important it is to be a role model for the younger children, I have loved every minute of, and it was my best day at school ever!’

Upon completion of the training all the new Active Ambassadors new exactly how important their role was in making the school more active and the benefits they could bring. The children were asked about what they were looking forward to when leading their activities and below you can see just what they had to say.

(Insert video of the children explaining what they were excited about)

Baildon C of E PE lead Jake Shepherd explained

‘the benefits that the award will have on the school as a whole ‘It will aid in having ALL children more physically active throughout the school day whilst giving the active ambassadors a chance to improve their leadership skill – a skill for life. In addition, it takes pressure off me as the PE lead and to other members of staff to deliver extra-curricular sessions. it will improve us massively with numerous areas such as behaviour, attendance, participation and increasing physical activity further.’

When talking about the class in particular Reuben spoke of the benefits the award will have on the pupils that completed the award There will be many benefits for those children who took part including the development of their leadership skills, confidence and ability to communicate with people of a range of ages.’

White Rose Active Ambassador trainer Jake Duxbury says

‘I have no doubt that the Active Ambassadors will be a huge success at Baildon C of E going forward bringing all the benefits that Mr Shepherd explained due to the amazing group of pupils they selected and their hunger to learn and continually develop. Jake and his team have already placed real value on the Ambassadors, and this reflects in the way the children see themselves. They will all be kitted out with Active Ambassador badges and ¼ zip tops which will add to the value the rest of the school places on them. I cannot wait to see how much of a positive impact these fantastic young Ambassadors will have on the school.’
