Active Ambassadors at Thornton Road Primary School

Pupil leadership is something that is growing ever more important in primary schools and at Thornton Primary this is no different.

Upon arrival at Thornton Primary School, our team — Jake and Emma — received a wonderfully warm welcome from Debbie, her staff, and all the children.

Thirty enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 pupils were selected to take part in our Active Ambassadors training. The goal was to equip them with essential leadership skills and empower them to become true Ambassadors for Activity within their school community.

From the outset, it was clear that this group of pupils were going to be exceptional. During the theory-based learning phase, they actively engaged in discussions, collaborated in groups, and completed independent tasks to strengthen their understanding of what it means to lead by example.

Trainer Emma shared her reflections:

“All the children arrived well-mannered, enthusiastic, and eager to learn. They were full of ideas and contributed massively to the whole process — coming up with brilliant suggestions about what an Active Ambassador should be and how to behave as a role model. The session was a joy to be part of, and their positivity was infectious!”

Throughout the training day, pupils developed and demonstrated the six key leadership skillscourage, kindness, teamwork, organisation, enthusiasm, and reflectiveness. Each child worked hard to earn their skill stickers, proudly proving their readiness to take on leadership roles within school life.

Year 6 pupil Elizabeth reflected on her experience:

“I didn’t know much about Active Ambassadors before we started, but straight away I was excited to learn about what we’d be doing. I really enjoyed planning my own game to show my organisation skill — I didn’t realise before how important planning is for being a leader. Now I feel ready to help younger children have fun and be more active at lunchtime so they can be happier and healthier.”

Following completion of the training, the new Active Ambassadors at Thornton have taken their roles seriously — leading lunchtime activities that make playtimes more structured, inclusive, and active.

Liz Davidson, Executive Headteacher, reflected on the programme’s success:

“Providing the children with this training has given them the opportunity to become genuine role models in school. We’ve seen them take on their ambassadorial roles with pride and courage. The structure they’ve brought to lunchtimes has supported our supervisors and improved overall behaviour. The children are doing us proud and have truly become ambassadors for activity at Thornton!”

When asked why their new role was important, the children gave a range of thoughtful responses, from helping younger pupils feel included to making the playground a more positive place for everyone.
